Butternut Leaflet Earrings
Butternut Leaflet Earrings
Based on the long, graceful shape of the butternut leaflet, to my mind these are the most elegant of my hand-carved earrings. The delicately wavy edges and concave shape catch every play of light, and the oilwax finish adds an almost silvery sheen to the wood.
Carved by hand with a gouge and chisel in North American basswood, the earrings are extremely lightweight, and each leaf is entirely unique. The hand-rubbed finish is non-toxic.
About Butternut:
Also known as white walnut (scientific name: Juglans cinerea), the butternut tree is an endangered species in Ontario, although it's still found in the south west, between the Bruce and the Canadian Shield. About a dozen or more leaflets make up each compound leaf of the butternut, and unlike the black walnut tree, its bark is silvery-grey.
